China defeated Japan 99-91 to take the women's basketball gold medal during the ongoing 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province, on Saturday.
Zhang Jingyi scored a game-high 21 points, Song Kexin added 20 points, and center Han Xu delivered 18 points.
China's coach Li Sunnan praised his squad's efforts. "Except for Zhang Jingyi, all other players are student-athletes on campus. They have to balance their studies while also performing well in the game, which is challenging," Li said.
In swimming, the FISU record in the 4X100m freestyle event was reset three times on Saturday.
Team Slovakia first updated the record to 3:40.63 in heat one, and then Team Brazil reset it after clocking 3:31.14 in heat two.
Team China, consisting of Lin Tao, Chen Juner, Zhang Yufei and Li Bingjie, hit the record with 3:25.38 in the final.
"My teammates performed very well in the previous three legs. I felt a little uncomfortable after jumping into the water, but I didn't want to disappoint them, so I tried my best and it turned out to be a success," said Zhang, who swam the fourth leg.
Olympic champion Zhang also triumphed in the women's 100 butterfly after clocking 56.57 to win the gold medal.
A total of 34 gold medals were attained on Saturday.
