The Netherlands and Sweden reached the FIFA Women's World Cup quarterfinals on Sunday, respectively, after beating South Africa 2-0 in normal time and U.S. 5-4 on penalties.

Jill Roord headed into the net early and Lineth Beerensteyn scored in the 68th minute to send the runners-up from 2019 to the next round where they play Spain, who thrashed Switzerland 5-1 a day ago to enter the quarterfinals for the first time.

Roord so far has scored four goals in the tournament, one short from leading Hinata Miyazawa of Japan in hunt for the golden boot.

South Africa appeared to be struggling under the pressure, and the frustration compounded when forward Jermaine Seoposenwe suffered an injury. Things got worse when Bambanani Mbane also had to leave the pitch with an injury before half-time.

Captain Thembi Kgatlana menaced up front with four shots on target, but her attempts at an equalizer were denied by Netherlands goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, who produced several outstanding saves.

Meanwhile, defending champions U.S. were outplayed by Sweden on penalties. After Hanna Bennison held her nerve to level the score 3-3 after Sweden missed two in a row, Magdalena Eriksson and Alyssa Naeher maintained the tie, but when U.S.' Kelley O'Hara squandered her chance to win the game, Lina Hurtig stepped up to win the game 5-4.

The U.S. dominated the match but couldn't find a way to score past the excellent Swedish goalkeeper Zerica Musovic who made a slew of fine saves to deny the Americans in an atmosphere of unrelenting tension.

Often starved of possession, the Swedes did not have a shot on goal until the 85th minute when substitute Sofia Jakobsson danced into the area, only to shoot straight at keeper Naeher.

Megan Rapinoe came off the bench to replace Alex Morgan in the ninth minute of extra time but was unable to create a winner for her team.
