Eleven people are confirmed to have died in a fire at a holiday lodging in eastern France that was being used by a group of adults with learning disabilities, the deputy prosecutor for the region, Nathalie Kielwasser, told reporters Wednesday.

The fire in the private building broke out at around 6:30 a.m. local time (0430 GMT) and was quickly controlled despite the violent flames.

Seventeen people were safely evacuated, with one person hospitalized and another treated for shock.

"In Wintzenheim, the flames ravaged a lodging which accommodated people with disabilities and their companions. In the face of this tragedy, my thoughts go out to the victims, to the injured and to their loved ones," French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on social media X.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne later arrived at the scene and expressed her "sadness" over the "appalling" disaster, with corpses being brought out of the ravaged building.
