Typhoon Khanun is expected to make landfall on the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula on Thursday morning, and regions in northeastern China will be affected by clouds around the typhoon, according to China's National Meteorological Center (NMC).

The typhoon will weaken after landing, and make impact to the border area of northeast China's Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces. It will enter China on August 11, the NMC forecast.

Between August 10 and 12, Typhoon Khanun will be combined with the west wind trough, bringing strong winds and torrential rain to eastern and northern regions in northeastern China.

Due to the high overlap between the rainfall area and the previous rainstorm affected areas in northeastern China, more attention should be paid to such regions to avoid severe disasters, warned the NMC.

On Tuesday, Typhoon Khanun moved slowly northward toward Japan's southwestern region of Kyushu, prompting a railway operator to suspend some of its shinkansen bullet train services, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

It is expected to continue advancing northward over the sea in the west of Kyushu through Thursday, said the JMA, adding that record-breaking precipitation could hit the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan through Friday.

On Monday, the Songhuajiang River in northeastern China reported its first flood this year, the Ministry of Water Resources said.

At 8 p.m. on Monday, the water level on the river's lower reaches reached the alert line and kept rising, according to the Jiamusi hydrological station. Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying said at a meeting on Monday that a total of 85 rivers in the basin have exceeded their warning levels.

The ministry asked local authorities to improve monitoring and early warning, strengthen dike patrols and emergency response, and evacuate people in threatened areas ahead of time.

Li called for measures to bring down water levels in reservoirs under high pressure while ensuring the safety of lower reaches during flood discharge. The development of Typhoon Khanun should also be closely monitored to prepare for typhoon-induced heavy rainfall in the region.
