At least six people were confirmed to have died after brush fires broke out in Maui County of Hawaii on Tuesday, according to the state's Emergency Management Agency. Thirteen areas were evacuated, with more than 2,100 Hawaiians staying at four shelters in Maui overnight.
On Tuesday, the County of Maui said a fast-moving fire impacting west Maui was being spread by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, which passed well south of Hawaii. It burned multiple structures, forced evacuations and caused power outages in several communities as firefighters struggled to reach areas cut off by downed trees and power lines.
