Does the "economy with China, security with the U.S." strategy work? Philippine ships barging into waters near Ren'ai Jiao shows that the Philippines believes the U.S.' "ironclad" commitment to its defense is its backbone in being tough on China. But, it might only be an illusion. To appease the Americans, Europe has been forced to do many things against its own interests, and it's trapped in a prolonged conflict as a proxy. Going down the path would doom the Philippines to the same fate. In the future, the Philippines will pay a price for the sense of security it's feeling right now. And that price might be too great for it to bear.
