A major power transmission project has been launched in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. CGTN's Gao Ang visited the construction site and new energy power stations in Xinjiang to find out how they will promote both energy security and carbon neutrality for China.
All the way from northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. An ultra-high voltage direct current power transmission project was launched on Tuesday.
XU YUBO, Manager, Hami-Chongqing Power Transmission Project "The total investment of the project is 28.6 billion yuan, and it may directly drive economic investment of over 57 billion yuan. The economic benefits are relatively significant."
GAO ANG, Balikun, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region "Another major feature of the project is the huge proportion of green electricity. With wind and solar power, new energy will account for more than half of all the electricity transmitted to Chongqing."
The project is expected to reduce Chongqing's carbon emissions by over 16 million tons. It will also add about 20,000 jobs and boost the local economy.
XU YUBO, Manager, Hami-Chongqing Power Transmission Project "After the project is completed, it will be able to meet the needs of about one-fifth of Chongqing's electricity consumption."
At the launching ceremony, top officials from Xinjiang and Chongqing stressed building a new energy system, peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.
They also said the project, built by the State Grid Corporation of China, will help realize the complementary advantages of integrating different resources and secure national energy supplies.
XIN BAOAN, Executive Chairman, State Grid Corporation of China "The investment in electric power infrastructure features a large scale with high technology input and many related industries. It's a ballast and a booster for steady growth. It also plays an important role in promoting common prosperity and improving people's well-being."
Rich in wind and solar resources, Xinjiang has transmitted electricity to other parts of the country since 2010. When the project is completed in 2025, it will add to the region's new energy power capacity, with benefits for the entire country. GA, CGTN, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
