Nick Kyrgios of Australia has decided to pull out of the U.S. Open this year, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday. According to ESPN, a wrist injury is the reason behind his withdrawal.

Kyrgios has so far played only one official singles match in 2023 and lost to Wu Yibing of China 5-7, 3-6 in the Stuttgart Open at Tennis Club Weissenhof in Stuttgart, Germany, in June. After exiting the U.S. Open, he will have missed all four Grand Slam tournaments of the year. His best record in the U.S. major was advancing to the quarterfinals in 2022.

Kyrgios missed the Australian Open at the beginning of 2023 because he had to undergo arthroscopic surgery to fix his injured left knee. His best record at Melbourne Park was reaching the quarterfinals in 2015.

In May, Kyrgios withdrew from the French Open because of a foot injury that, according to his agent, he sustained during a car robbery. He had advanced to the third round at Rolland Garros in 2015 and 2016.

Kyrgios was listed as the No. 30 seed for the Wimbledon Championships, but he failed to play due to a wrist injury. He achieved his best performance at the Major by reaching the final at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in 2022.

Playing so little in the year led to a huge drop in Kyrgios' Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world ranking, which has fallen to No. 92.

Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany pulled out of this year's U.S. Open as well. He and Kyrgios will be replaced by Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

The U.S. Open will begin on August 28 and end on September 10 this year. The brackets will be determined on August 22.
