The Xizang Plateau endemic rare fish, Pareuchiloglanis gracilicaudata, was discovered in northwest China's Qinghai Province after disappearing for more than 40 years in the Lancang River Basin.

The Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with the agriculture and animal husbandry department of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, carried out surveys and germplasm collection of fish resources, and discovered Pareuchiloglanis gracilicaudata for the first time in the upper reaches of the Lancang River.

According to Zhao Kai, a researcher at the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, said that the Pareuchiloglanis gracilicaudata is endemic to the Xizang Plateau, but also the only carnivorous benthic native fish in Lancang River Basin of Sanjiangyuan. This species has high environmental requirements and is the indicator of a water body.

The species was recorded in a small number of cases in the 1970s, but has not been detected since then and is considered extinct in the region. The new survey infers that the species is extremely small in number and has a narrow habitat range.

At present, the species is known only by simple biological characterization, and there is a lack of in-depth research on its population size, population structure and genetic germplasm resources. This discovery reflects the abundant aquatic biological resources in the Lancang River.
