Jin Bao Bao and Hua Bao are currently residing in Finland's Ähtäri Zoo.

Originally from the Dujiangyan base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the giant panda duo arrived in Finland in January 2018 on a 15-year loan under a research program.

Jin Bao Bao, the female giant panda, was given the Finnish nickname Lumi, which translates to "snow." While Hua Bao, the male giant panda, was given the Finnish nickname of Pyry, which means "heavy snowfall."

When they were let out for the first time into the open air of Finland, the pair was excited about the heavy snowfall in their new playground. They rolled about in the snow and climbed a tree, expressing joy.

The two pandas are being kept in separate enclosures by the zoo, however, the facility allows them to see each other.

The zoo also has occasionally let the two swap dormitories so that they can get familiar with each other's smells and to encourage their affection towards each other.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2019, a men's choir in Finland sang a beautiful Chinese song to the giant pandas to make them feel at home.

Birthday celebrations for the pandas each year were highlights of the zoo and drew crowds of visitors. The pandas were also spoiled with sufficient fresh bamboo and fruits.

In 2020, the Ähtäri Zoo was faced with financial difficulties and began discussions to return the pandas to China.

The latest news from the zoo is that they will continue the program for the time being and that the two giant pandas will remain there with hopes to bring in more visitors this year.
