Baghdad's temperature reaches 50 C
02:54

Baghdad's temperature hit 50 degrees Celsius at the weekend as the stifling heat wave continues. Residents say they're having to drink much more water to try to cool themselves down. Most construction workers are working only at night, and the high temperatures are likely to continue for some time. The United Nations ranks water-stressed Iraq as one of the five countries most impacted by climate change. The shore of the Euphrates river at Habbaniyah, about 70 kilometers west of Baghdad, has receded by dozens of meters after four years of drought.
