China and Vietnam should promote cooperation in various fields and strengthen strategic mutual trust, Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, said on Wednesday.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang on the sidelines of the seventh China-South Asian Expo in Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province.
China firmly supports ASEAN unity and its centrality in regional cooperation and is willing to work with the ASEAN countries including Vietnam to oppose interference from external forces and maintain the peace and stability of the South China Sea and the region, he said.
He called on both sides to jointly safeguard political and institutional security, and push forward bilateral relations towards the goal of building a China-Vietnam community with a shared future.
For his part, Tran said that developing relations with China has always been the top priority of Vietnam's foreign policy.
Opposing and wary of external interference, Vietnam will strengthen high-level exchanges with China, deepen practical cooperation in all fields, play its due role in ASEAN and jointly maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea, he added.
