Lai Ching-te, a Taiwan politician and the Democratic Progressive Party chief, transited through New York and San Francisco airports on his way to and back from Paraguay. The move was strongly criticized by the Chinese mainland and protested by Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese in the U.S.
