A mysterious treasure trove of rock paintings depicting early nomadic culture in the Namtso Lake area of Xizang Autonomous Region in southwest China was discovered during a scientific research expedition started in 2017.

Located on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the vivid portrayals of wild animals in the rock caves offer a glimpse into the early nomadic culture of the plateau. Chinese researchers are using a variety of scientific techniques to date the rock paintings and unveil some of the mysteries of the prehistoric art found there.

In northern Africa, rock art depicting horses, cattle and human figures has provided valuable insight into the use of animals throughout history, as well as bearing testament to their importance to Saharan peoples. Located in northeastern Chad, the Ennedi Massif is considered a Saharan treasure for its rock art that bears witness to the passing of time.

Dating from 5,000 BC onwards, the paintings and engravings comprise one of the largest collections of rock art in the Sahara characterized by a wide range of themes and styles.
