China increases radiation monitoring in its waters as Japan starts dumping contaminated wastewater
CGTN

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) started discharging Fukushima's radioactive wastewater into the ocean at 1 p.m. local time on Thursday.

China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment on Thursday morning voiced strong opposition to Japan's decision, saying that the act is "extremely selfish and irresponsible." It strongly urged the Japanese government to heed the voice of the international community and accept strict international supervision.

According to the ministry, China has been monitoring radiation in its waters over the past two years. It said the concentration and radioactivity of artificial radionuclides in the seawater and marine organisms are within normal range.

The ecology ministry said it will strengthen the monitoring of China's waters and assess the impact of Fukushima's contaminated water on China's waters to earnestly safeguard the country's interests and people's health.
