Advancing flames devoured forests and homes as dozens of wildfires raged across Greece on August 23, leaving 20 people dead over the past three days. A major blaze on the northwestern fringe of Athens has encroached into the national park on Mount Parnitha, one of the last green areas near the Greek capital. Evacuations were ordered for several settlements on the outskirts of the capital.
