Rudy Giuliani, a personal lawyer for former U.S. President Donald Trump, on Wednesday turned himself in to the authorities in Atlanta in the southeastern U.S. state of Georgia for the Georgia election interference case against Trump and 18 others.
He was charged with 13 crimes, including breaking the state's racketeering act, engaging in various criminal conspiracies and making numerous false statements about election fraud.
The bond for Giuliani, who was released after being booked, like the other defendants, was set at $150,000, second only to Trump's $200,000.
Giuliani, 79, is accused of spearheading Trump's efforts to compel state lawmakers in Georgia and other closely contested states to ignore the will of voters and illegally appoint electoral college electors favorable to Trump.
Georgia was one of several key states Trump lost by slim margins in the 2020 presidential election, prompting Trump and his allies to claim that the election was rigged in favor of his Democratic rival Joe Biden.
Outside the Fulton County Jail Wednesday afternoon, Giuliani laughed when asked if he regretted allying himself with Trump.
"I am very, very honored to be involved in this case because this case is a fight for our way of life," the former mayor of New York City told reporters. He called the indictment a travesty and an attack on the American people.
Trump is set to surrender on Thursday to face his fourth criminal indictment this year.
