A Chinese military spokesperson on Friday voiced firm opposition to the U.S. arms sale to China's Taiwan region.

The U.S. State Department has approved a possible $500 million sale to Taiwan of infrared search and track systems for F-16 fighter jets and other equipment, according to media reports.

Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, responded that the U.S. move is a gross interference in China's internal affairs and is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, especially the August 17 Communique.

It also threatened the security and well-being of Taiwan compatriots as well as the peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits, he added.

Zhang stressed that the Taiwan question is at the very core of China's core interests, the bedrock of the political foundation of China-U.S. relations and the first red line that must not be crossed in the China-U.S. relations.

The spokesperson urged the U.S. side to fulfill its commitment to not supporting "Taiwan independence," to immediately stop arming Taiwan and to stop enhancing military contact with the region.

"Using Taiwan to contain China is doomed to fail, and seeking 'independence' by military means will lead to a dead end," said Zhang.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army has always been on high alert to firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and it has resolutely upheld peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, he added.
