Dispute over Fukushima Water | Ep.1: Why Japan chose to discharge the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water
03:10

In the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the Japanese government established two specialist sub-committees made up of government officials and experts. They were tasked with tackling the mounting challenge posed by nuclear-contaminated wastewater. "From the cost perspective, of the five options, ocean discharge, which Tokyo Electric Power Company has opted for, is the cheapest. The estimated cost is around 3.4 billion yen (about $23.22 million)," said Kenichi Oshima, a professor at Ryukoku University.
