Three U.S. Marines died on Sunday after an Osprey aircraft crashed on Melville Island, north of Darwin, in Australia, during a routine training exercise, the U.S. Marine Rotational Force in Darwin said in a statement.

"There were a total of 23 personnel on board. Three have been confirmed deceased while five others were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition," the statement said.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, according to the statement.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has told reporters that Australia was fully cooperating with its U.S. allies to provide assistance following the "tragic" crash.
