China on Monday urged the U.S. to stop meddling in South China Sea issues, stop sowing discord and creating trouble, and refrain from disrupting peace and stability in the region.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to a joint statement by the U.S. and Indonesian defense ministries issued on Pentagon's website which claims that the two sides shared the view that China's "expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea are inconsistent with international law as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea."

"We noted that no such content can be found in the press release by the Indonesian Defense Ministry on the same meeting and the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia has communicated with the Indonesian side, who said what the U.S. side described is not true," said Wang, adding this is not the first time such things have happened.

Noting countries in the region share common aspirations and interests to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea and work together for development, Wang urged the U.S. to earnestly respect regional countries' efforts to uphold peace and stability in the South China Sea.
