Joseph Olivier Mendo’o is a Cameroonian student at Peking University. Inspired by a letter in reply he received from President Xi Jinping, he has traveled extensively in rural parts of China, seeking to understand the way the country is governed and, in particular, how it has succeeded in alleviating poverty. What has impressed him most is that the people and their interests are always put first in the country's governance.
