Lai Ching-te's controversial visit to the U.S. & its implications for China-U.S. ties

Slammed by Beijing as a "complete troublemaker," deputy head of the Taiwan region Lai Ching-te recently made two low-profile "stopovers" in the United States while on a seven-day trip to Paraguay. Though he met with no major U.S. officials, the trip has been condemned by Chinese officials as a provocation of Taiwan independence and PLA military drills around Taiwan have already begun in response to the visits. What more do we know about Lai Ching-te, who is currently running for leader of Taiwan in next year's elections? As a self-claimed "pragmatic Taiwan independence worker," where might Lai push the already-tense cross-Straits ties? And as the Taiwan question is at the very core of China's national interests, how might China-U.S. ties be affected? Guests in this episode are John Pang, independent political analyst; Zhao Hai, director of international political studies at the National Institute for Global Strategy; and Einar Tangen, senior fellow from the Taihe Institute.
