What is the role of the ever-expanding Shanghai Cooperation Organization?

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is the world’s largest regional organization, covering 60% of Eurasia and 40% of the world’s population. On Tuesday, the heads of state of the SCO gathered for a virtual summit where the SCO officially welcomed Iran as its newest member, extending its reach to the Persian Gulf region. What more do we know about the summit? What are the pressing issues for the organization? And how can Iran’s membership help the group address global and regional issues?
