In the first summer since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, Chinese audiences are back in the theaters again. By the beginning of August, the summer box-office revenue in the Chinese mainland already hit 14 billion yuan, and is likely to reach 40 billion for the year. Is China's film market back to pre-pandemic levels? What characterizes this year's summer movie season? And what can we say about China's film industry today and where it's going in the future?
