The U.S. government on Wednesday declared a public health emergency in Florida over Hurricane Idalia and deployed about 68 emergency response personnel to the state.
Idalia, which slammed into Florida as a Category 3 hurricane, has weakened into a tropical storm, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday. The storm was about 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Savannah, Georgia, packing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 km/h), the NHC said.
It made landfall in Florida's Big Bend near Keaton Beach earlier Wednesday. The Florida Highway Patrol said two people were killed in separate weather-related car crashes in the state. A third person was killed in Georgia as he attempted to dismantle a fallen tree that blocked a road.
As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 900 flights have been canceled as travel across the American Southeast was disrupted.
Airlines including Delta, United, American and Southwest have issued rebooking waivers for people traveling to and from cities in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina between Monday and Thursday.
