Nominees in the documentary and animation categories at the inaugural Golden Panda Awards were released on Wednesday, 20 days ahead of the opening of the cultural event.

Set to take place every two years and permanently hosted in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the first Golden Panda Awards is scheduled to be held in the provincial capital of Chengdu from September 19 to 20, 2023.

There will be a total of 25 awards in four categories: Film, TV dramas, Documentary, and Animation.

The Germany-based documentary "Miss Holocaust Survivor" and the Iranian documentary "Standing with the Wolf" will contend for the Best Documentary Award this year, along with "Second Life," "Re-discover Sanxingdui," and the China-U.S. co-produced "The Miracle Panda."

Up for Best Director of a Documentary are Doan Hongle for "The Mother," Song Haomin for "Enemy of the People," the director of "Little Giants" Sun Chao, Mellissa Fung for "Captive" and Anja Krug-Metzinger for "Great Apes – A Story of the Feeling Moral Mind."

Iran's "No Substitute," China-based "I Am What I Am" and "Yao-Chinese Folktales," U.S.-based "Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania," and "Looking for an Heir to the Home" from Kazakhstan will compete for the Best Animation Award.

The nominee list for the Best Visual Effects in Animation Award includes China's "Deep Sea," "Winter Wind" from France," "Kaghati," "Chinese Mythological Stories," and "Ahru."

The event will feature a variety of activities such as the Golden Panda Night and the First Golden Panda International Cultural Forum, in addition to the Golden Panda Awards Ceremony.

Organized by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government, and with the panda serving as a symbol of cultural exchange, the Golden Panda Awards is set to be an international cultural program that will create a global community via shared appreciation of films.
