The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired several cruise missiles toward the western waters on Saturday, Yonhap reported, citing the Republic of Korea's (ROK) military.

The ROK's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the launch began at around 4 a.m. The ROK and U.S. intelligence authorities were analyzing the launches while monitoring signs of additional activities, the JCS said.

It was the latest in a series of missile tests and military exercises conducted by the DPRK in recent weeks, including a failed space rocket launch late last month.

Seoul announced sanctions on Friday on five DPRK individuals and one company in response to Pyongyang's launch of the rocket.

On Thursday, the DPRK's state media outlet KCNA reported that Pyongyang had conducted a simulated "scorched-earth" nuclear strike on targets across the ROK, drawing criticism from Seoul.

Meanwhile, the joint annual summertime exercises between the ROK and the U.S., known as the Ulchi Freedom Shield, came to a close on Thursday after an 11-day run featuring air drills with B-1B bombers.

Pyongyang, which has long denounced the drills as a rehearsal for war, protested the deployment of the U.S. strategic bombers by firing two ballistic missiles just hours later in retaliation.
