This year marks 160 years since the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The committee's president, Mirjana Spoljaric, was in China on an official visit from September 4 to 7. During her journey, she exchanged views on deepening cooperation and exploring the potential of the Belt and Road Initiative with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
CGTN reporter Cen Ziyuan sat down with Spoljaric to learn more about China's role and the ICRC's involvement in global humanitarian assistance. She said humanitarian pressures are growing and accelerated by the impact of climate change, ongoing wars and poverty. Spoljaric shared her concerns about the use of explosive weapons and how shrinking resources have forced the Red Cross to "prioritize" responses globally. She also provided the younger generation who want to dedicate themselves to a career of humanitarianism with thoughtful pieces of advice.
