On the centrality of the ASEAN bloc, independent political analyst John Pang believes that it doesn't come from complying with or having its agenda set by Western media or think tanks. Threatened by external disruptions, he said ASEAN has to grow its ability to sail its own course, which requires a certain degree of intellectual and cultural autonomy.
