The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, defensive end Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers, is convinced that he will appear in the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, despite his 43-day holdout with the team.

"I'm confident," Bosa said. "I'm not sure what [coach] Kyle [Shanahan's] plan is, but I would be up for [a] normal workload, for sure."

It has been only two days since Bosa joined his teammates in practice. He did some workouts on a limited basis on Thursday and then was listed as a full participant in Friday's half-speed session.

Like many star players, Bosa skipped most of the 49ers' pre-season training camp before reaching a satisfying contract extension. On Friday morning, he signed a five-year, $170 million deal, including $122.5 million guaranteed with the team. Both the annual salary and the guaranteed money became the highest for a non-quarterback in league history.

"He looked exactly how we were expecting him to look," Shanahan said of Bosa. "Looks in real good shape. Looks ready to go. We got an idea how we're going to use him and I think he'll do all right."

"It is not really trying to put a limit on what he can do," defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said. "It's just trying to get a feel, and once we get into the game and then go from there."

Bosa tallied 18.5 sacks and 51 tackles last season for the 49ers as a top defender in the NFL, giving him more leverage for the extension negotiation between his agent Brian Ayrault and the team.

"There's certain points throughout it that are more stressful than others," Bosa said. "But I trust the team around me and I know that they have my best interest in mind. And I trusted the 49ers organization and all of them to work well with my guys. I had trust all along, but it definitely was stressful."
