On September 8, a magnitude-7.0 earthquake hit Morocco at 11:11 p.m. local time at a depth of 18.5 km. More than 2,000 people were killed, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescuers struggle to get through boulder-strewn roads to remote areas hit hardest. Morocco has not experienced a disaster of this magnitude since 2004 when a magnitude-6.3 earthquake hit the port city of Al Hoceima, killing around 630 people.
