Encounters with Xi Jinping: "HE MENTIONED ME IN HIS SPEECH"

Australian Sinologist Colin Mackerras first came to China as a young English teacher in 1964. Since then, he has returned to the country on more than 60 occasions. In 2014, Prof. Mackerras was afforded a very special honor, when President Xi Jinping, during a speech to the Australian Parliament, praised his contribution to friendship and understanding between the two countries. Almost 60 years since his first visit, Prof. Mackerras retains his enthusiasm and passion for the country and its people. He is particularly impressed by China's success in eliminating absolute poverty, describing it as "a fantastic achievement."
