The Belt and Road Summit 2023, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, opened in Hong Kong on Wednesday. The summit attracted nearly 6,000 government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs and start-up representatives from nearly 70 countries and regions. More than 100 overseas and mainland delegations are participating in summit activities.

Hong Kong has always been an advocate, contributor and beneficiary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), said John Lee, chief executive of HKSAR in his speech at the opening ceremony of the summit. Hong Kong is set to expand cooperation with BRI partners in a wide range of fields, such as trade and investment, innovative technology and infrastructure development, so as to achieve common prosperity, said Lee.

Since its inception in 2016, the Belt and Road Summit has become the largest and most significant BRI business investment platform for enterprises from the mainland, Hong Kong and overseas. Over the years, it has hosted more than 3,800 deal-making sessions, with over 33,000 participants.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the BRI. In addition to consolidating markets such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the forum features a new session dedicated to the development of the Middle East market.
