The United Nations relief chief Martin Griffiths on Tuesday said the world body is allocating $10 million from the UN's emergency fund to swiftly support people affected by floods in Libya.

"We stand with the people of Libya at this difficult time," he wrote on social media.

According to Libyan state media, the floods have taken over 5,300 lives so far and thousands of others remain missing after a Mediterranean storm made landfall in eastern Libya on Sunday, triggering floods and destroying facilities along its path.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed "heartfelt condolences" to the Libyan authorities and the families of those who have perished as a result of the deadly storm, according to his spokesperson.

The UN team in Libya is responding at the site and the UN is mobilizing resources and emergency teams to support the affected people, said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for Guterres.
