Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka is a sanctuary and captive breeding site for Asian elephants. Built in 1975, its staff feed and care for orphaned baby elephants found in the wild. Now the facility is providing sanctuary to adult elephants as well, including injured or aging animals that can no longer survive on their own.
