China is planning to develop a new generation of meteorological satellites, according to its chief designer on Friday.
The third-generation Fengyun meteorological satellite observation system will be more open and inclusive, allowing access to the satellites with different scales and capabilities that meet a standard threshold, according to Dong Yaohai, chief designer of the Fengyun-4 satellite at the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
Dong, one of the pioneers of the country's Fengyun meteorological satellite, said that the new generation will become a global leader in the industry.
He said the new-generation satellite will establish an intelligent observation system that integrates the satellites with meteorological stations on the ground.
Through intelligent collaboration, processing, decision-making and response of high and low Earth orbit satellites, a rapid and mobile response to meteorological disasters can be achieved.
In addition, the new generation satellite will provide customized service and real-time delivery of disaster information.
China has launched 21 Fengyun series satellites so far, nine of which are in orbit.
