China's National Health Commission (NHC) on Friday announced the decision to manage the prevention and control of mpox with measures against Class-B infectious diseases starting from September 20.

The NHC said it will classify the disease as a Class B infectious disease in compliance with the country's Law on Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases.

The country classifies infectious diseases into three classes, with other Class B diseases including COVID-19, AIDS, tuberculosis and SARS.

China reported its first imported mpox infection in September 2022, and local mpox epidemics began to appear in June 2023.

Since June 2023, multiple cases have been reported in 20 provinces in the country, posing a high risk of new local outbreaks and hidden transmission.

The Chinese mainland has seen 501 new confirmed cases of mpox through August, among which 98.9 percent are male, according to NHC data.
