A tiny bit of moon soil is on display at an event in China's capital city Beijing to attract more people to learn science.

The event, launched on Saturday and set to run until September 24, is being held by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the Beijing Municipal Government for the celebration of the 20th National Science Popularization Day.

CGTN visited the event a day in advance as guest media. Hundreds of teenage students from local schools were also invited to take an early look at the event venue.

The piece of moon soil, or what space scientists call the lunar sample, on display weighs 100 milligrams and is sealed in a transparent container.

The soil was sampled from the moon during the Chang'e-5 mission in 2020.

Besides the lunar sample, the re-entry module of the Chang'e-5 mission is also showcased, with all the scratches and scorch marks in place. The module was responsible for bringing the lunar sample back to Earth.

Models of satellites, landers and other spacecraft are also available for curious eyes. The young visitors can even try driving a lunar vehicle in a simulator.

VR simulation is used to experience driving China's high-speed rail, C919 jetliner and deep-sea submersibles at the event.

Not all students are visitors to the show. Some of them brought their own creations on the stage. Students from the Affiliated High School of Peking University switched on their singing-and-dancing robots built with cardboard and open-source technology.

The event occupies 8,700 square meters of land and covers basic science, AI tech and many other sci-tech fields. A total of 360 items from 104 companies and research institutions are being displayed.
