The painting "Yue Zhong Gui Tu Tu," or "Rabbit in the Moon," was created by official Jiang Pu in 1758 and is housed by the Palace Museum in Beijing. /CFP
The painting "Yue Zhong Gui Tu Tu," or "Rabbit in the Moon" was created by official Jiang Pu on a piece of rectangular paper during the mid-Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It depicts a large and round rabbit sitting under an osmanthus tree with its fine hair distinct and clearly visible. All the patterns and shapes were painted in a circle, creating a full moon. From the poems written in the spaces above and below the image, we can conclude that the painting was created during Mid-Autumn Festival in 1758 at the Chengde Mountain Resort in Hebei Province to celebrate the Qianlong Emperor’s birthday. Senior official Jiang Pu created this painting with Mid-Autumn elements and the emperor and other officials inscribed poems on the painting.
