Located in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, the Luoyang Bridge –which is also known as Wan'an Bridge –is one of the four most famous bridges of ancient China. Three special techniques were used in its construction during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), which are still admired to this day. Firstly, the bridge's piers were shaped like boats, which dissipated the impact from the waves. Secondly, the stones needed for the beams were transported to the site on wooden rafts. Thirdly, oysters were planted around the piers which, by bonding the foundations, enhanced the bridge's stability.
