Julian Nagelsmann, former manager of Bayern Munich, will take over as the new boss of the German men's national football team on a short-term contract until the UEFA European Championship in 2024, The Athletic reported on Tuesday.

Multiple media outlets, including Bild, reported the news. According to Sport1's Kerry Hau, Bayern have been working on concluding their contract with Nagelsmann. He was with the Bundesliga powerhouse from April 2021 to March 2023. Having helped the club win one Bundesliga title and two DFL-Supercups, he was fired in the middle of the 2022-23 season, before his contract was set to expire.

There were clubs interested in appointing Nagelsmann as their new boss after he parted ways with Bayern - Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain were all among the list, but he didn't join any of them.

Germany sacked Hansi Flick after the 4-1 loss to Japan in a friendly game last week. Although the team managed to beat France 2-1 in the following game under interim manager Rudi Voeller, the German legend has said he would only be a temporary coach, meaning they needed to find a new permanent manager to begin making plans for Euro 2024.

After the firing of Flick, it was revealed that the Deutscher Fussballbund - the German FA - had a shortlist of eight potential replacements. Many wanted Liverpool's boss Jurgen Klopp to take over, but he made it clear that he won't leave Anfield as long as his contract stands. Ex-Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal's name was on the list as well, but there has never been a non-German manager for "Die Mannschaft."

By contrast, Nagelsmann is German, not with any team at the moment and also considered a top managerial prospect: Bayern won 60 of the 84 games under him, and his sacking by the club came as a surprise to many.

Germany's next friendlies will be games against the USA and Mexico in October.
