The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources declared a Level-IV emergency response to flooding in China's Jiangsu and Anhui, as well as Henan provinces in central China on Thursday, as the Huaihe River prepares for its first flood of the year.

China has a four-tiered emergency flood-control response system, with Level I being the most severe reaction.

The water level at the Wangjiaba hydrological station on the upper channel of the Huaihe River is expected to reach the alert level on Thursday night as a result of the recent heavy rain.

The ministry predicted that mild to moderate rain will fall on the upper course over the next three days. It has encouraged local governments in the three provinces to guarantee timely monitoring and forecasts, make proper use of water conservation projects, and increase levee patrolling.

The government has also sent work teams to Anhui and Henan to support flood protection efforts.
