British teenager Josh Tarling on Wednesday claimed the men's elite individual time trial title at the European Cycling Union (UEC) road cycling championships in the province of Drenthe, the Netherlands, cementing his growing reputation as one of the sport's future stars.
The 19-year-old, who was bronze medalist at the world championships in Scotland last month, defeated Stefan Bissegger of Switzerland by 43 seconds with Wout van Aert of Belgium taking bronze just a fraction behind on the 29.5-kilometer course.
Stefan Kung of Switzerland, a pre-race favorite, crashed into a barrier before finishing 11th, with blood pouring from his face and with his helmet shattered.

In the women's race, Swiss rider Marlen Reusser celebrated her birthday with individual time trial glory as she claimed the title for a third time.
The 32-year-old finished 43 seconds ahead of Britain's Anna Henderson with Christina Schweinberger of Austria a further second behind.
"It's really, really special and nice to win it a third time. It makes me really happy and especially you know today is my birthday," said Reusser.
"I think for my physique it's good [the flat course], although at the moment I can also climb very well so it doesn't really matter, what is in favor for me is that it isn't maybe too technical," she added.
