Rescuers are struggling to recover bodies floating offshore or buried under collapsed buildings after deadly floods swept Derna in eastern Libya. Triggered by Mediterranean storm Daniel, the floods have claimed the lives of over 11,000 people, with a further 10,100 missing. Tawfiq Misrati, who leads the rescue and research operation, said 485 bodies of victims had been retrieved, a figure far lower than the number of people missing. With daytime temperatures in the hardest-hit city, Derna, exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, there are concerns that decomposing bodies will cause epidemics as time passes. The local authorities say they will pay more attention to hygiene practices and epidemic prevention to mitigate the growing risk of disease transmission.
