Global cooperation was advocated on Saturday at the opening event of the 2023 Bund Summit, where experts emphasized the need to build bridges in navigating through complex and uncertain global economic waters.
In opening remarks, Ning Jizhe, vice chairman of China Center for International Economic Exchanges, pointed out that China's further development has brought new opportunities for cooperation rather than risks to the world.
He said that while the global economic recovery has slowed down, China's economy has shown resilience and a forward-moving trend despite its ups and downs, holding an overall leading position worldwide.
Meanwhile, former U.S. State Secretary Henry Kissinger also addressed the summit, warning against the dangers of decoupling between the United States and China. He said that such a move would adversely affect the standards of living in both countries.
Kissinger expressed his belief that dialogue between China and the U.S. regarding artificial intelligence will transpire, urging both nations to avoid pursuing unilateral advantages as it concerns the safety and well-being of every human being.
Xie Zhenhua, China's special envoy for climate change, highlighted China's significant contributions to global energy security and the promotion of low-carbon energy transformation. He stated that China accounts for more than one-third of the global new-energy installed capacity and has become the largest investor in new energy resources.
He stressed the importance of opposing trade protectionism, pointing to studies which indicated that continued trade protectionism could result in up to 25-percent increase in the prices of photovoltaic components by 2030. This, he said, would hinder the Group of 20 leaders' target of tripling global renewable energy installed capacity by then.
Xie also called for the creation of an open and inclusive economic and trade investment environment, and the formulation of non-discriminatory and coordinated fiscal and financial policies.
The ongoing 2023 Bund Summit aims to facilitate consensus building on matters of mutual concern and foster global economic growth and stability through collaboration.
