Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong on Saturday hailed the work of farmers and those working in the agriculture sector.

While attending celebrations for the 2023 Chinese farmers' harvest festival in east China's Anhui Province, Liu said more work should be done to continuously do a good job in agricultural production in order to consolidate the foundation of food security on all fronts.

He also urged efforts to take solid steps in promoting rural revitalization, take multiple measures to increase farmers' incomes and carry out in-depth work in rural development.

Autumn harvest

As autumn comes, many parts of China are ushering in the autumn harvest.

According to China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the country has seen a stable increase in the planting area of autumn grain this year, with an estimated area of 87.3 million hectares, an increase of about 467,000 hectares.

The output of autumn grain accounts for more than 70 percent of the total annual grain output, including summer grain, early-season rice and autumn grain.

The Ministry of Finance recently allocated 2.4 billion yuan (about $330 million) to support disaster prevention and reduction in agriculture, and ensure the grain output.

Farmers' harvest festival

Farmers across China celebrated the sixth Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival on Saturday.

Established in 2018, the festival coincides with the autumnal equinox each year, which is one of the 24 solar terms of the Chinese lunar calendar.

In 2021, China joined forces with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on a project focused on enhancing agricultural industry development in 16 impoverished Chinese villages.
