Confucian philosophy has had an enduring effect on Chinese food and dining etiquette. One of Confucius' famous rhetorical questions asks: "Is it not delightful to have friends coming from distant quarters?" The text expresses the joy that people feel when friends arrive from afar.

Confucius also believed that the practice of dining was the source of rites. While eating with students and guests, he was aware that people observed certain norms of etiquette. This may sound like common sense, but it is important to remember that the renowned Chinese philosopher Confucius came to these thoughts some 2,500 years ago when he was trying to establish a new culture at a time of primitive development.

German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) was a big fan of dinner parties. He was convinced that conversation provided intellectual stimulation, which he refers to as a "refreshing play of thoughts." Dining alone, on the other hand, represents an opportunity squandered. Social gatherings, he said are "a veritable medicine for the mind."
