"I feel that I am singing for my grandfather although he passed away when I was nine," said Laufey Lin, a young Chinese-Icelandic jazz singer when asked how she felt about collaborating with the China Philharmonic Orchestra hours ahead of her maiden concert in Beijing on Tuesday evening. Her grandfather, Lin Yaoji, was a violin instructor at the Central Conservatory of Music in China and many of his former students now play with the China Philharmonic Orchestra.

Lin has developed a large online fan base of Gen Z followers through her renditions of jazz, pop and classical music through the videos she posted on various social media platforms, even though jazz is widely regarded as a genre mostly enjoyed by middle-aged listeners. She talked of her determination to make old-fashioned jazz and classical music more accessible to young people through modern storytelling. "I want to show that they can be cool, too," she said.
