Why are people burning a pagoda to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival?
00:56

Mid-Autumn Festival is a time when families get together to admire the full moon and eat mooncakes, but there are other traditions too. One of them is the "burning pagoda," which people do in Xinshi Town in the city of Miluo in central China's Hunan Province. More than 30,000 people were expected to attend this year's three-day event from September 27 in the city.

Why do people burn a pagoda? Originating in the late Yuan Dynasty, the "burning pagoda" ceremony dates back more than 600 years. It has now evolved into a folk activity of praying for prosperity. People build a tower structure with bricks and tiles. They then place wood and bamboo inside and burn them at night. It's believed that burning these towers can bring luck and good harvests.
